Why elevator lines fail first
Elevator phone lines are the most neglected copper on most buildings. Nobody dials them. There is no ring to miss and no bill anyone questions. The line can be dead for a year and the only symptom is a failed test.
That is also why they are the most common line we find already broken during an audit — before any carrier retirement has happened at all.
The code requirement is not ambiguous. ASME A17.1 requires two-way emergency communication from inside the car, reachable at all times, and functional during a power outage. An inspector tests it by pressing the button. If nobody answers, the elevator does not pass.
Why you cannot just move it to VoIP
A standard office VoIP line is not a substitute. The code assumes a connection with particular supervision, power and reliability characteristics, and consumer or office-grade VoIP routed over the public internet does not provide them. Plugging an elevator phone into a desk phone system is the single most common way buildings fail a re-inspection after a phone system upgrade.
A managed POTS replacement is a different thing. It presents the same analog interface the elevator phone expects, is built to the applicable UL, NFPA 72 and ASME A17.1 guidelines, keeps traffic off the public internet, and has its own battery backup so it survives the outage the code is worried about.
What replacement actually involves
1. Find the line. Elevator phone lines are rarely labeled. We identify which line on the bill feeds which car, which is often the first time anyone has documented it.
2. Check signal in the machine room. Machine rooms are frequently on a roof or in a basement, and wireless signal has to be verified on site. Where it is marginal, an external antenna solves it. Where it is genuinely absent, you find out before you buy anything.
3. Swap the line, not the phone. The phone stays. The programmed number ports over, so the monitoring company records and the inspector sticker stay valid.
4. Test it like an inspector would. The technician presses the button, confirms two-way audio, and confirms it works on battery. Where the jurisdiction requires witness testing, we coordinate with your elevator contractor.
What it costs
$49 per line, per month, with white-glove installation included. Hardware, the wireless connection, the phone service and the site visit in one recurring number, with no separate installation invoice.
For elevator lines specifically, we do not recommend the self-install tier. The value here is that a certified technician stood in the machine room, verified signal, and tested the phone the way an inspector will. That is the whole product. Installation is handled by a nationwide technician network, so this is the same service whether the building is in Virginia or Arizona.

Will this pass inspection?
That is the design goal. Nothing about the certified system changes — not the phone, not the number, not the wiring inside the car. Only the transport underneath changes, and it is built to the applicable code guidelines with battery backup.
Do we keep the same phone number?
Yes. The number ports, which matters because it is programmed into the phone and recorded with your monitoring company and inspector.
What if there is no cell signal in the machine room?
Common, and usually solvable with an external antenna run to a location with signal. This gets verified during the audit rather than discovered on install day.
We have several elevators across several buildings. Does that change anything?
It changes the sequencing more than the price. We phase by risk, so cars with an inspection due or a line already dead go first. Quotes can be broken out by building or department where your budget requires it.
Our elevator contractor handles the phone. Should they do this?
Many elevator companies are happy to keep maintaining the phone and let someone else own the line. We coordinate with them rather than around them, and we are glad to talk to them directly.
