Why this one carries the most risk
NFPA 72 treats loss of communication as an impairment. Depending on your jurisdiction and your insurer that can mean a fire watch, which is an expensive way to discover a dead phone line.
Panels are also quiet about it. A dialer that cannot seize a line will report trouble, but that trouble often shows on a panel nobody walks past, in a room nobody enters between inspections.
The other trap is a phone system upgrade. When a building moves its voice service to VoIP and the fire panel lines get moved along with it, the panel frequently stops communicating and nobody finds out until the annual test.
Why standard VoIP does not work here
A fire alarm communicator expects a supervised analog line with specific electrical behavior. Office VoIP does not guarantee it, does not survive a power outage on its own, and routes over the public internet.
A managed POTS replacement presents the analog interface the panel expects, is built to the applicable UL, NFPA 72 and ASME A17.1 guidelines, keeps traffic off the public internet, and carries its own battery backup.
How the replacement runs
1. Identify both lines. Most panels use a primary and a secondary. We confirm what is actually connected rather than what the drawings claim.
2. Coordinate with your monitoring company. They need to know the transport is changing and they need to confirm signals after the swap. We handle that conversation directly.
3. Swap the lines, keep the numbers. The programmed dialer numbers port, so the panel programming does not change and the receiver still recognizes the account.
4. Test end to end. The technician trips a signal and confirms it arrives at the central station, on both paths, on battery. Where the jurisdiction requires witness testing, we coordinate with the fire marshal and your alarm contractor.

Fire panel lines are not where to save money on self-install. The value is that a certified technician verified the signal arriving at the central station, which is exactly what the inspection checks. Installation is carried out by a nationwide technician network, so multi-state portfolios get the same standard everywhere.

Frequently asked questions
Does our alarm company need to be involved?
The monitoring company does, because they confirm signals after the change. Your alarm contractor is welcome but not always necessary, since the panel itself is not modified.
Will the panel need reprogramming?
Usually not. The dialer numbers port over, so the panel keeps dialing the same number it always has.
What about a cellular communicator instead?
That is a legitimate alternative and sometimes the better answer, particularly if the panel is due for replacement anyway. It means capital spend, panel work and re-inspection. Line replacement is the faster, cheaper path when the panel is fine and the letter has already arrived.
